Accepting Substitutes

“Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us” Eph 3:20

A recently married woman moved to a small town in Wyoming. Clothing stores were in short supply and her busy ranch life left little time for the long trips to larger cities to shop. Her situation was made more difficult by the fact that she was a hard to fit size. To solve her problem, she began relying on a major store catalog which carried her size. The printed order forms sent by the store had this sentence at the bottom: “If we do not have the article you ordered in stock, may we substitute?”

Since she rarely ordered unless she really needed the article in question, she was hesitant to trust strangers to make an appropriate substitution, but she replied “yes,” hoping it wouldn’t be necessary. This approach worked well until one day she opened a package from the company and found a letter which read, in part, “We are sorry that the article you ordered is out of stock, but we have substituted…” When she unwrapped the merchandise she found an article of greater quality worth double the price she paid! On each order after that, the woman wrote “YES” in large red letters at the bottom of the order form by the substitution question. She had confidence the store would provide her with the best they had to fill her order. 

When we pray to God, we are wise to add to our requests that we are quite willing to accept a substitution for what we think we need. We can trust God to send us the perfect answer because, as our Maker, He knows what will fit us better than we do.Because He knows the future in a way that we do not, He can answer in a way that goes beyond our highest expectations. Every time He sends substitutes, we can be sure He is sending something much better than we could have ever imagined.
