A Quiet Moment

This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength” Isa 30:15

Between the great issues of life there is quiet. Silence characterizes the highest in art and the deepest in nature. It’s the silence between the notes that give them rhythm, interest, and emphasis. The surest spiritual search is made in silence. Moses learned in Midian and Paul in Arabia what would have eluded them in the noisy streets of men. Silence reaches beyond words. The highest point in drama is silence. The strongest of emotions don’t always cry aloud. The most effective reproof is not a tongue lashing. The sincerest sympathy is not wordy or noisy. The best preparation for an emergency is the calm of quietness.

silenceTime spent in quiet prayer is the best preparation for intelligent action. The best proof of quality is often silence; the great engine is almost noiseless. The best indicator of confidence is almost always silence. The person who is confident of their position does not argue or raise their voice or even try to explain everything.

Quiet times are most cherished in the middle of busy days. Sometimes the quiet does not offer itself; it must be sought out. At other times, the surroundings don’t allow for true silence. It is in those moments when the Holy Spirit can supernaturally turn down the volume and allow moments of quiet communion with God from within. A coffee break is a perfect time to seek a quiet spot for a few minutes of real refreshment in the presence of a “still, small voice.” (1 Kings 19:12)
