Charities

Before you make any donations to what you might think is a good cause,

make sure you read the statistics below!

give to charityJust because an organization claims to be a charity or a not for profit company, does not necessarily mean they are a good choice to donate your hard earned money to them. Take a look at some of the companies below and determine for yourself if this is where you want your money to go.

The American Red Cross’s CEO, Marsha J. Evans makes an annual salary of $651,957.

The United Way’s president, Brian Gallagher, receives a $375,000 base salary along with numerous expense benefits.

UNICEF CEO, Caryl M. Stern, receives $1,200,000 per year ( yes, that’s $100,000 a month) plus all expenses, including a Rolls Royce. And less than 5% of all donations received goes towards any cause.

I am not sure if this is a coincidence or not, but the March Of Dimes only gives 10 cents for every dollar to research.

Finally, the company that is the go to charity when all else fails is Goodwill. The CEO and owner of this company, Mark Curan, makes a profit of $2.3 million a year. You donate to his business and he then sells the items for a profit. He pays nothing for his products and pays his employees minimum wage. The worst part is, this money does not help anyone. He makes no contributions to anyone, at least not in the name of the business. It all goes into his pockets! If you read nothing else on this page, STOP GIVING TO THIS MAN!

The good news is that not all charitable organizations are this way. For every one organization that takes advantage of the good nature of people, there are dozens of good, reputable charities. Take a look at a few who are in it for the right reasons.

The Salvation Army, an international movement, is an evangelical part of the universal Christian Church. Its message is based on the Bible. Its ministry is motivated by the love of God. Its mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ and to meet human needs in His name without discrimination. The commissioner of this group, Todd Bassett receives a small salary of only $13,000, plus housing to mange this 2 billion dollar operation. 96% of donated income goes towards their mission.

The American Legion, The Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Disabled American Veterans, The Military Order of Purple Hearts and the Vietnam Veterans Association are all run by separate National Commanders, who all volunteer their time. They do not receive any salary. All of their funds go towards helping veterans and their families and various youth organizations.

The Make A Wish Foundation grants the wish of a child diagnosed with a life threatening medical condition, on average every 38 minutes. 100% of all donations goes towards the funding of these wishes.

The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of their founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay. 100% of their donations go towards this mission.

The Ronald McDonald House Charities helps more than 7 million families every year through trying times when a child is in critical condition in the hospital. RMHC can help address problems such as providing housing that’s near a hospitalized child, helping with the expense of staying together in another city, or even getting basic medical and dental care in a vulnerable community. 100% of all donations goes towards housing and feeding these families.

And finally, on our short list, The Lions Club International spends 100% of their donations on helping the blind, buying hearing aids and other miscellaneous medical missions around the world. Their latest undertaking is providing measles shots for $1.

This list is by no means complete. there are many other worthwhile causes and organizations that actually use your donations for their stated causes or missions. The point here is to make sure you do your homework before you start giving money away. Don’t let a few bad apples dissuade you from lending a helping hand where needed. If you have any questions or concerns you can always defer to your local church. They can assist you with any decisions you need to make and can point you in the right direction. Also, another reputable online source is charitynavigator.org.

Also feel free to comment if you know of an organization that could fit into the above list.
