They Already Knew Him

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” Matt 5:16

A missionary was sent to a faraway land where few Westerners had ever ventured. To anyone’s knowledge, no missionary had ever ministered in that area, nor had the Gospel been preached. Therefore, he decided to begin by explaining the story of Jesus Christ in the most simple way possible.

Having painstakingly learned the language, he gathered the village together to hear the first sermon about a loving God. He told of the selfless love, infinite compassion, merciful tenderness, and dynamic healing power of Jesus Christ. Then he noticed they were beginning to nod and smile knowingly, as if they already knew the Man who went about doing good. Delighted with their obvious interest and reception, he was nevertheless baffled by their recognition of Jesus as a person.

Finally he could contain his curiosity no longer. He asked how many in the audience had ever heard of this Man. The response was overwhelming. It seemed they all knew Him! Astonished, he asked, “How? When? Who told you about Him?”

“He used to live among us!” an older gentleman said. “We called him Doctor, but he was as you’ve described him exactly.” As it turned out, the village had once had the services of a patient and loving Christian physician. He lived among them and took care of them in sickness and health for many years. So strong was his simple, Christlike love and care, the villagers had mistaken him for the Savior the missionary described.

Determine to live your life in such a way that even the lost would recognize Jesus in you!
