What A Friend

“…I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you” John 15:15

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to god in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit!
O what needless pain we bear!
All because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer.

Joseph Scriven, the writer of the hymn, “What a Friend We Have In Jesus,” had a life of great sorrow. A day or two before his wedding, his fiancee drowned. This tragedy put him in a melancholy state that stayed with him the rest of his life. In spite of his despondent temperament, the power and presence of God were evident in Scriven’s life. He was a philanthropist and a devout Christian. He had a reputation as the man “who saws wood for poor widows and sick people who were unable to pay.” To other people Scriven was the friend that they had found in Jesus.

Scriven wrote this hymn to comfort his mother in a time of sorrow. He never intended that anyone else would see it, but the manuscript was discovered by a neighbor. When asked if he had written it, Scriven said, “The Lord and I did it between us.”

Spend a few minutes today with your best friend, Jesus. He didn’t die for you so you could go through struggles alone and carry heavy burdens by yourself. He gave Himself so you and He could become friends, and friends always stand by and help each other out. You only need to share your need with the Lord Jesus in prayer to find comfort!
